FDA widens warning for contaminated eye products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers Wednesday to stop buying and using Delsam Pharma's Artificial Eye Ointment due to potentially serious health risks. The ointment is marketed as a “cure-all” for a range of eye disorders, including dry eyes, cataracts, glaucoma, and styes, but the FDA has determined it is not safe for use. According to the FDA, Delsam Pharma's Artificial Eye Ointment contains two ingredients – trolamine and procaine hydrochloride – which have not been approved by the FDA for any medical use. These ingredients could cause serious side effects such as headache, confusion, mental changes, seizures, or difficulty breathing. Additionally, the product has not undergone any testing for safety or efficacy. The FDA urges consumers to immediately stop using Delsam Pharma's Artificial Eye Ointment and dispose of any remaining ointment. Consumers should also contact their healthcare provider if they have experienced any side effects from using the ointment. Consumers should be aware that not all products sold as “cure-alls” are safe or effective. The FDA recommends that people consult with their healthcare provider when considering the use of any health product, including eye ointments, in order to ensure they are using a safe and effective product.
